Part of larger, more acidic, remnant spruce forest, all of which is under conservation easement at The Mountain Institute, (camping and educational use allowed);Mixed spruce-deciduous second growth forest under conservation easement at the Mountain Insistute. Down wood and moss-covered boulders <1m diameter are abundant. Tall well-formed trees. Cores show vigorous growth after probable clear-cutting around 1900, followed by slowly declining growth rates. Substrate has sandstone boulders, but soil has red mauch chunk.

This stand, which is west of the main spruce stand at the Mountain Institute, is on a richer substrate and has more diversity. Plot was placed in a part of the stand that is relatively undisturbed by campers and hikers, and which is away from linear seep
